About the Edition

Turtle Alveston is a survivor. At fourteen, she roams the woods along the northern California coast. The creeks, tide pools, and rocky islands are her haunts and her hiding grounds, and she is known to wander for miles. But while her physical world is expansive, her personal one is small and treacherous: Turtle has grown up isolated since the death of her mother, in the thrall of her tortured and charismatic father, Martin. Her social existence is confined to the middle school, and to her life with her father. Then Turtle meets Jacob, a high-school boy who tells jokes, lives in a big clean house, and looks at Turtle as if she is the sunrise. And for the first time, the larger world begins to come into focus.

“My Absolute Darling is Gabriel Tallent's first novel, and no less than Stephen King has called it a "masterpiece" to rank with To Kill A Mockingbird and Catch” —NPR “Our generation’s next beloved literary is one of the most important books you'll pick up this decade.”/5(K).   My Absolute Darling is a strange hybrid of a book, part gorgeous nature writing, part psychologically astute family drama." —Tampa Bay Times “Explosive There are many elements of this story we would rather not believe — all so convincingly rendered that we can’t help but believe them.” —The Boston GlobeBrand: Penguin Publishing Group.   My Absolute Darling (Riverhead, pp., ***½ out of four stars) is a powerful debut novel for Gabriel Tallent and a gripping introduction to a seriously brave little girl.   Gabriel Tallent's My Absolute Darling is a shocking and unsettling novel about child abuse — it can be difficult to read, but it's an excellent debut from the Utah-based author.

My Absolute Darling desperately wants to be the next great American novel. It’s decked out in all the hallmarks of high concept literary fiction—lots of laboriously flowery sentences endlessly strewn with adjectives, long periods of time during which nothing happens, and a grimdark aesthetic set in northern California. The information about My Absolute Darling shown above was first featured in "The BookBrowse Review" - BookBrowse's online-magazine that keeps our members abreast of notable and high-profile books publishing in the coming weeks. In most cases, the reviews are necessarily limited to those that were available to us ahead of publication.   My Absolute Darling is the much feted debut by the young American writer Gabriel Tallent. At its heart is the intense, warped love between Turtle and Martin. He’s taught her everything he knows, Author: Lara Feigel. Book Summary ""The word 'masterpiece' has been cheapened by too many blurbs, but My Absolute Darling absolutely is one." —Stephen King A .

My Absolute Darling by Gabriel Tallent – review A year-old wild child, her abusive father and the lush California coastline are the indelible ingredients of a gripping debut novel Alison Flood. MY ABSOLUTE DARLING by Gabriel Tallent: A brilliant and immersive, all-consuming read about one fourteen-year-old girl's heart-stopping fight for her own soul. Author of My Absolute Darling Gabriel is the author of "My Absolute Darling"- a brilliant and immersive, all-consuming read about one fourteen-year-old girl's heart-stopping fight for her own soul.   But “My Absolute Darling” is a novel that readers will gulp down, gasping. For all its bleakness, the story does have some fine lighter touches.   To my own shortlist I can now add My Absolute Darling, by Gabriel Tallent. Fourteen-year-old Turtle Alveston is a brilliantly rendered creation, and her father is the most terrifyingly believable human monster to inhabit the pages of a novel since Harry Powell in The Night of the Hunter. This book is ugly, beautiful, horrifying, and uplifting.".
